    Chapter Index

An elite police officer, standing tall and expressionless, watched his relief arrive in a brisk march. They saluted, the exchange brief and formal, then the relief officer marched away.

Around the corner, the officer saw a group of relieved officers lounging in a corner, fanning themselves with their caps, smoking, drinking bottled water, and whispering. The officer visibly relaxed, the tension leaving his body.

He quickly walked to a stack of bottled water near the entrance, grabbed an unopened bottle, twisted the cap off, and drank it down in one go. Only then did he enter the group, removing his cap.

“Shift change?” a middle-aged officer asked, loosening his belt and windbreaker.

“Yes, Master.” The young officer sat down heavily, fanning himself with his cap while undoing his windbreaker.

“Haha, does it feel like you’re back at the police academy?” the middle-aged officer chuckled.

“It feels stricter than the police academy’s military training. Completely still, perfect posture, and a vibrant expression is mandatory. The posture is fine, a young man can manage that, but the vibrant expression… it’s agonizing,” the young officer complained.

“Hey, that’s also because the Gran envoy didn’t stay long. Otherwise, we’d all be on duty; there’s no way we could rotate,” the middle-aged officer laughed.

“Man, I kind of envy those patrolling officers. At least they can wander around,” the young officer sighed.

“Kid, don’t take this for granted. This guard duty will be recorded in your file! It’s a golden opportunity for promotion later!” the middle-aged officer good-naturedly swatted his apprentice with his cap.

“Guard duty goes in the file?” the young officer looked utterly confused.

“Haha, old friend, your apprentice is pretty daft. Looks like you haven’t trained him well,” a nearby officer jeered.

“Shut up!” The master first rebuked his colleague, then, exasperated, glared at his apprentice. “Idiot! We were guarding the meeting between the Gran envoy and the three-city patrol inspectors of the Guangwu Governorate. Because of our dedication, the meeting and discussions concluded successfully. This experience should absolutely be recorded in our files!”

“It can be recorded like that?!” The young officer was dumbfounded.

At that moment, an officer hurried in. “The Mayor and Chief have left. Only the Patrol Inspector remains in the meeting room. The Chief said that after this security detail, everyone gets three days off!”

“The Chief is awesome!” The group of officers erupted in low cheers.

It was no wonder they were so happy. Due to the rebels occupying the Governor’s Mansion, the police had no days off, and patrols were required 24/7. With insufficient personnel, everyone in uniform was working overtime and rotating street patrols, leaving them exhausted.

Three days off? Not being happy would be strange.

As they joyfully discussed how to spend their three-day vacation, the officers suddenly heard an alert: “All units, unauthorized intrusion detected!”

“What?!” The officers’ faces fell, and they quickly put on their caps and rushed out.

Two officers who had just taken over, facing each other, could see the forced cheerfulness on each other’s faces. They secretly exchanged a wry smile and sighed. They still had an hour of duty before their relief arrived. It was excruciating.

What was the Patrol Commissioner doing? Didn’t the guests leave? Why was he still in the meeting room? If he had something to tell his sister, couldn’t he leave and do it elsewhere?!

Regardless of their inner complaints, they stood with a determined expression.

However, their eyes suddenly noticed someone approaching the gate, and they immediately turned to look. Upon seeing who it was, they froze.

It was a young, somewhat handsome man with a ponytail, wearing an ancient warrior’s robe and a black-hilted saber at his waist. Incredibly, he was wearing straw sandals. He walked slowly and deliberately toward them.

Initially cautious due to the man’s attire, the officers, upon noticing the black hilt of the saber, immediately straightened their backs, their eyes fixed on the oddly dressed man.

This was a small courtyard in the Municipal Government compound. Everyone in the compound knew who was here today, so no one would normally dare to show up without permission.

The officers found the notion of an intrusion unbelievable. The Municipal Government compound’s interior? Who could break in?

Therefore, in the officers’ minds, this must be an official’s child trying to attract the attention of dignitaries with his strange outfit in the hope of advancement. There were plenty of people like that; these two officers had stopped such individuals for the Chief before.

However, given that he was possibly an official’s child, the two officers didn’t shout at him. But if he dared to enter the courtyard, they wouldn’t hesitate to stop him.

The officers, bored after half a day of duty, all turned their attention to this. Other officers remained stiffly at their posts while the two at the main gate turned to face the entrance, eyeing the man in the ancient warrior’s robe.

He neared the gate and stepped into the courtyard, and the two officers, eager to act, immediately shouted, “Halt! State your identity!”

They were still very cautious and demanded his identity, although the black-hilted saber indicated he was just an ordinary person. But perhaps his family held enough status to warrant some deference?

The young, handsome man let out a sneering smile and calmly said, "Dogs," and somehow, the two officers went limp and collapsed to the ground. He continued walking, passing through the courtyard gate.

All the officers watched in astonishment. Two colleagues suddenly falling was like a hornet’s nest being disturbed. The officers immediately drew their sidearms, nervously advancing while notifying their off-duty colleagues via police comms.

“Hmph! Ants, killing you would soil my hands!” The young man coldly snorted. The police who rushed forward, weapons raised, were unable to utter a warning before falling unconscious.

As he heard the sounds of chaos approaching, his expression was one of disdain. He glanced at the group of officers rushing toward him, and they all fell unconscious like they had been hit with a club.

For a moment, the courtyard was silent, only the young man walking forward. He passed through another wall and saw the meeting room where Lin Dongyun was located, guarded by twelve of Lin Dongyun’s soldiers, as well as Ling Jie and Ling Li.

They were surprised to see a young man in an ancient warrior’s robe entering but didn’t worry. The outer perimeter was guarded by local police; in their minds, anyone who could get this far must have passed security.

Ling Jie and Ling Li naturally assumed he was a new guest, although his attire was rather unusual. They approached to ask him some questions.

As soon as their eyes met, they collapsed, their eyes rolling back. The twelve soldiers felt like they’d been hit by a club, but being seasoned veterans, they were more resistant than the police. They struggled to raise their weapons and prepare to fire.

“Hmm? Not bad, worthy of being the elite of the Guard Zone.” The man said, his hand resting on the hilt of his saber. Two rapid clashes echoed as he removed his hand from the hilt.

The twelve soldiers, stared in stunned silence at their severed weapons, before feeling a sharp pain in their chests. Deep wounds opened, spurting blood. Only then did they fall, screaming.

The young man was already walking up the steps, hand once more on his saber. A flash of light, and the sturdy door shattered into pieces that were sent flying into the meeting room.

My apologies, I’m a bit late today.
