    Chapter Index

Besides the man dressed in ancient warrior attire, a middle-aged man in a suit sat opposite him. Beside the man in ancient clothing was a woman dressed as an ancient attendant, carefully undoing the man’s robe.

A large, red and swollen fist mark was visible on his pale chest.

The middle-aged man in the suit raised an eyebrow but remained silent, simply watching.

The ancient attendant quickly took out an injection gun, aimed it at the swollen fist mark, and pulled the trigger.

With a soft "pffft," the swelling rapidly dissipated, revealing a more obvious indentation in the breastbone—several ribs were clearly broken.

At this point, Gu Wenfei, the man in ancient clothing, gritted his teeth and pressed his hand lightly on the wound.

Then, with a sudden movement of his hand, several crisp cracks sounded as he realigned the broken bones, making his chest appear somewhat flatter.

However, the movement caused the wound to swell and redden.

The attendant again pointed the injection gun at the wound and pulled the trigger. She then replaced it with another injection gun and repeatedly injected several points on the breastbone.

In a short while, the wounds on his chest completely disappeared, leaving no trace of injury.

Under the attendant’s care, Gu Wenfei took some kind of medication and then moved his body.

Once he felt that there was no problem, he sighed in relief, fastened his robe, and coldly stared at the middle-aged man in the suit opposite him. "Broy, the intelligence you provided was wrong. Lin Dongyun is not a simple 1st-Order Transcendent."

Broy shrugged. "It’s impossible for him to be a 2nd-Order Transcendent, is it? You, a 2nd-Order Transcendent, failed to assassinate a low-level Transcendent?"

"He didn’t even reach that level; he didn’t even make a move. I was knocked away by his robot guard with one punch. So, the intelligence was still wrong," Gu Wenfei frankly admitted his failure while seizing on the flawed intelligence to pressure Broy.

"A robot guard? What kind of robot guard can knock away a 2nd-Order Transcendent like you with one punch? What did the robot look like?" Broy frowned.

"It was a tall woman wearing ornate armor with white and tender skin. If I hadn’t taken that punch, I would have thought it was a specially modified bio-android," Gu Wenfei said.

Broy frowned, pondered for a moment, then suddenly slapped his hand against the table. "It’s the Gran Empire’s ‘Third-Generation Multipurpose Triple-Protection Guardian-Level Warship-Type Self-Propelled Armor’! That’s high-end stuff; even in the Gran Empire, only nobles can use it. How did a mere Patrol Commander from the Qinglin Empire obtain it?"

He snapped his fingers. "That’s right, the Albert envoy of the Guangwu Governorate has the title of a knight and is a noble. He’s the only one who could obtain this armor. And he had visited that Patrol Commander Lin Dongyun before. So, the Gran Empire’s investment in the Guangwu Governorate is Lin Dongyun, is that it?"

Gu Wenfei quietly watched Broy mutter to himself, remaining silent. The air suddenly thickened.

Broy quickly reacted, spreading his hands and laughing. "Gu, you can’t blame me for the inaccurate intelligence. Who knew that Gran’s envoy would give Lin Dongyun such a precious gift?"

Gu Wenfei remained silent, continuing to stare.

Broy, feeling slightly unnerved by the intense stare, nodded. "Alright, it was our intelligence failure. The previous agreement still stands—10 land-based mechas will be delivered to you."

"Good, as quickly as possible," Gu Wenfei nodded, turning his gaze to the attendant beside him. The attendant immediately presented him with a saber—a saber with a red cord wrapped around its hilt.

Gu Wenfei took the saber, placed it on his lap, leaned back more comfortably, and asked, "Broy, why did you want to kill Lin Dongyun? Our Revolutionary Army hasn’t even advanced to this remote area; such a small fry isn’t worth the Hualanxi Republic’s attention, is it?"

"Gu, the reason we targeted Lin Dongyun is twofold: one, to test the strength of your Revolutionary Army, and two, that kid disrupted one of our plans a while ago; this is an opportunity for revenge."

"That was the original plan. But it was an unexpected bonus to discover that the Gran Empire has chosen him during this probe," Broy chuckled.

"Are the Great Powers planning a proxy war?" Gu Wenfei’s face darkened.

"Heh heh, Gu, it’s not that I look down on you, but currently, with you only controlling three city Patrol Camps and occupying the Governorate’s capital city, your power is insignificant, not only in the Qinglin Empire as a whole, but even just here in Cui Lan Star." Broy made a tiny gesture with his pinky finger, indicating a minuscule amount.

"Such a small amount of power can’t be considered a proxy war. For the Great Powers of Hualanxi and Gran, at least a war between planets qualifies as a proxy war."

"Your Revolutionary Army is merely an investment for me, a Third-Rank Military Officer at the Hualanxi Republic Embassy on Cui Lan Star. As for Lin Dongyun, he’s only a personal investment by Albert, the Gran envoy in the Guangwu Governorate."

"So, don’t get too big for your britches. According to your terms, even we’re just insignificant from the point of view of the top brass," Broy said calmly, spreading his hands.

The sound of Gu Wenfei’s fingers tightening around the saber hilt was audible, but ultimately he smiled. "Broy, since you’re willing to pay for 10 land-based mechas for this failed assassination, it means you’re optimistic about our Revolutionary Army, and once our forces expand, your profits will naturally increase."

Broy nodded. "Yes, I am optimistic about you; otherwise, I wouldn’t be providing resources for a failed mission. To put it frankly, if your Revolutionary Army can take over the Guangwu Governorate, I can directly become the Chief Military Officer of the Hualanxi Embassy on Cui Lan Star. Then, forget about continued mecha support; I can even support you with a batch of gunboats!"

"Really? Even gunboats?!" Gu Wenfei’s eyes lit up.

"Of course! Moreover, I will offer a special reward. As long as you completely crush the power of Patrol Commander Lin Dongyun, I’ll personally give you 10 land-based mechas and a gunboat!" Broy held up a finger.

"It’s a deal! Haha, targeting Lin Dongyun so intensely obviously means that he’s the Gran envoy’s chosen one? So it turns out the competition between Hualanxi and Gran for the world’s top spot isn’t just talk—they’re even competing in this area!" Gu Wenfei laughed heartily.

Broy shrugged. "Don’t celebrate too soon, Gu. Don’t blame me for being blunt, we’re friends, so I have to remind you that the Revolutionary Army has too many commanders. You are just one of them. And you are one who, because no one else was available, had to personally assassinate the target to show your sincerity. This is somewhat out of line."

"I know." Gu Wenfei’s face darkened.
